Changsha Medical University overview
Changsha Medical University (CSMU) was founded in 1989 in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province. It began as a health vocational school and became a full undergraduate medical university in 2005. It is known as China’s first private medical university at undergraduate level and operates under the Hunan provincial government.
The university has taught international students since 2000. More than 342 international students have graduated, over 120 are enrolled now, and more than 50 of them are from Pakistan. Besides the six-year MBBS (Clinical Medicine), it offers a five-year Stomatology (BDS) program and courses in preventive medicine, medical imaging, pharmacy and nursing.
Clinical training is supported by 19 directly affiliated general hospitals, including one Grade III-A and four Grade II-A hospitals, plus 139 internship hospitals with more than 25,000 beds in total. The campus has an eight-floor library with an international student reading room, two-person furnished dormitories, halal food and sports facilities.
The MBBS runs 5 years of study plus a 1-year internship. Chinese language is studied from year 1, medical subjects are taught in English from year 2, and students must pass HSK 3 by the end of year 1 to move into the five-year clinical program. Students who do not pass may have to repeat the language year. The internship can be done at affiliated hospitals in China or in your home country.
Is it MOE-listed? No. Changsha Medical University is a Non-MOE university, which means it is not on the Ministry of Education list of universities approved to teach MBBS in English. See the MOE vs Non-MOE comparison on our universities page so you know the difference before you apply.
