Why your CV matters for the acceptance letter
The CV is the first document a Chinese professor opens. It is attached to your first email, uploaded to the CSC and university systems, and read again by the review committee. A clear, honest, one-to-two page CV shows your academic level in a minute and makes the professor more likely to reply.
What to include, section by section
| Section | What to write |
|---|---|
| Personal information | Full name exactly as on your passport, nationality, date of birth, email, WhatsApp number and home address. Use a professional email address. |
| Education | Newest first. Degree, major, university, country, start and end dates, and your CGPA or percentage. |
| Research interest | Two or three lines on the topic you want to study. It should match the professor's field. |
| Publications and thesis | List journal papers, conference papers and your final-year or master's thesis title. Skip this section if you have none. |
| Work or research experience | Job title, organisation, dates and two or three bullet points of what you actually did. |
| Awards and scholarships | Merit awards, position holders, competitions and any earlier scholarships. |
| Skills and languages | Software, lab skills, English test score, HSK level if you have one. |
| References (optional) | Two referees with name, designation, organisation and email. Only add them if they agree. |
How to make your CV step by step
Download the template
Open the Word template above and save a copy with your name, for example Ali-Khan-CV.docx.
Fill in your personal and education details
Copy names, dates and marks from your certificates and transcript so that everything matches your documents exactly.
Write a short research-interest line
Mention your target field in simple English. Keep it close to what your chosen professor publishes.
Add experience, publications and awards
Use short bullet points that start with an action word such as designed, tested, analysed or led.
Check the length and format
Aim for one to two pages. Use one clean font, consistent dates and no photos or decorations unless the template has them.
Save as PDF
Export a PDF for emails and uploads. Keep the Word file so you can edit it later.
Your name spelling, date of birth and degree titles must be the same on the CV, passport, study plan and application form. Small mismatches can slow down your application.
Common CV mistakes to avoid
- Writing a long CV of three or more pages with unrelated details.
- Using a different name spelling from your passport.
- Copying a CV from the internet without changing the content to match your own record.
- Claiming publications, awards or skills you cannot prove.
- Adding a casual email address such as cooldude123@....
- Sending the file as a phone photo instead of a clean PDF.
Frequently asked questions
How long should the CV be?
One to two pages is best. Professors read many CVs, so keep it short and relevant.
Should I add a photo to the CV?
A photo is not required. Follow the template. The passport-size photo is handled separately in the application.
I have no publications. Is that a problem?
No. Many applicants have none. Show your thesis, projects, internships and skills instead. Never invent publications.
Can I use the same CV for every professor?
Use the same base CV, but adjust the research-interest line for each professor and field.
Which file format should I send?
PDF. It keeps the layout the same on every device.

Requirements can change each year and differ by university and program. Always confirm the final list on the official CSC study-in-China portal and your chosen university's admission page. CIES Study guides you, but scholarships are decided by CSC and the universities, so no result is guaranteed.
